One of the more disturbing aspects to come out of the Premier Leagues 39 game fiasco is the derision of my beloved club Wigan Athletic by so called personalities, journalists and disturbingly supporters of other clubs.
To much of the footballing world we seem to be a joke, why?
Many will say its our support but look at these figures:
Wigan Athletic 20,609 average attendance 2005/06 compare to Notts County 11,133 average attendance 1991/92
There are many other clubs in recent history with a much poorer average attendance in the top flight than us, such as:
Southampton, Oldham Athletic, Crystal Palace, QPR, Bradford City, Barnsley, Swindon Town, Luton Town and Wimbledon to name but a few.
Here are two attendances from the 1991/92 season of 'top flight` football:
Luton Town Vs Sheff Wed attendance 9,401
QPR Vs Sheff Wed attendance 12,990
These games were found without any deep research just a google type of attendances English Prem 1991/92
I know that there have been many lower attendances than theses in recent years and none featuring Wigan Athletic but some featuring 'big` clubs such as Chelsea.
I read comments made in the week by Newcastle United supporters slating the Latics, come on, now there is a joke club if you ever wanted one, what have the Geordies ever achieved?
Up until recent years they could not fill their ground and now they are acting like they are the new Manchester City and its become fashionable for them to be 'all hard done by`.
Well Geordie boys the Premiership would be a better place without your big time Charlies; let me tell you the football world owes you nothing, earn it, relegation and a bit of humble pie would do you a world of good.
Bernie Ecclestone, who? Says Wigan in Singapore? What are you going on about idiot?
Ecclestone jumped on the sleeping giant of Queens Park Rangers, the team that should have won the league once, but didn`t, have they achieved anything else, nope didn`t think so and what is Ecclestone in all this for? Wait and see; prime land at Loftus Road.
The majority of English Football is made up of clubs like the Latics, town clubs supported primarily by people who live there and generations of the same family going to games together.
Wigan Athletic are now a Premier League club, earned by winning games and climbing the ladder that is the English league system, we are new to the top flight but still as said it has been earned.
The Wigan fan base is now growing, this site has members from New Zealand and Australia, North, Central and South America, Asia and Europe as well as parts of the UK that have no connection with Wigan apart from the love of the Latics.
The 39th game is wrong, it smacks of greed, selfishness and contempt, but as long as the little guys like the Latics keep getting knocked the Premier League will think they can get away with what they like, just ask Sheffield United.
