'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan Athletic Runners and Riders

As the season reaches its climax it is worth looking at who we the fans see as the player of the season (being done it the style of a horse betting form)

Outsiders

Titus Bramble…100/1

Was a surprise favourite early in the season but a couple of stumbles mid season has seen him relegated to the gallops. Unlikely he would last the course.

Marlon King…100/1

Signed as a thoroughbred, but resembling a pony at present. Doesn`t look fit for this level of race.

Julius Agahahowa…100/1

Another big money purchase who has proved to be totally ineffectual. Expected to be sent to stud at the end of the season

Each way bets

Jason Koumas…60/1

A real class act on his day but doesn`t seem to like the heavy going.

Emerson Boyce…50/1

A steady goer who won`t let anyone down

Kevin Kilbane…40/1

The oldest in the field but has been a revelation coming from behind this season.

Emile Heskey…40/1

Has struggled with injuries this season but coming into form at the right time although may have left it too late for the big prize.

Antoine Siberski…40/1

A thoroughbred who may be past his best, better suited to shorter races as there are questions re fitness.

Marcus Bent…30/1

Has won his owner lots of praise but rumours are that his trainer doesn`t rate him

Good bets

Antonio Valencia….10/1

Probably the classiest runner in the field although has off days.

Michael Brown…8/1

A real tenacious stayer. Worth a punt

Wilson Palacios…8/1

Only came into the race part way through the season but has been a good purchase for the owner.

Chris Kirkland…7/1

Another one with questions over his fitness but has proved himself this season to be a class act

Front Runner

Paul Scharner…4/1

An indifferent start to the season but since getting a new trainer has become a superb front runner

Mario Melchiot….2/1

Has everything, class stamina and staying power. Must be favourite to win

If I was a betting man my money would go straight on Wilson Palacios to win at a canter
