'If It's Football, It's Vital'

What the bosses said Latics Brum

The game between Wigan Athletic and Birmingham at the JJB had got a lot of people talking before the game and a lot more after, Latics missed chances, Johnsons sending off, the poor Birmingham performance, the result, but the two opinions that cut the most are the managers, Steve Bruce and Alex McLeish, lets see what they have to say:

Latics boss Steve Bruce

'We can't say that we're safe until it's mathematically safe. It's a step closer but we've got a nice easy one next week at Chelsea!

'Our first-half performance was arguably the best since I came to the club.

'The players were absolutely right up for the challenge and played some really good stuff on a difficult pitch, as you've seen.'

'Of course it's sweet'

'Birmingham would have wanted to turn me over as well but thankfully my players were first in every department and never gave them the chance.'

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish

'The lunge has been outlawed in the game. More and more referees are now showing a red card, regardless of contact or not.

'Damien, I don't think touched the guy. Kilbane got up very quickly.

'When you lunge and you bare your teeth, i.e. show the studs, it can be difficult for the referee not to give a red card.'

'It was tough playing with ten men for such a long time. It's hard enough for us when we're playing with 11 men.

'The better team won today. They were much stronger than us physically and played well also.

'We never got anywhere near the level we've shown in recent weeks and to play for such a long time with 10 men was doubly hard.'

Well there you have it, nice of McLeish to acknowledge that the better side won
