'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dave Watson to Wigan - We told you two weeks ago

Its two weeks since Vital Wigan first broke the news that former Everton and Norwich City centre back Dave Watson has joined his old buddy Steve Bruce at Wigan Athletic to become the Latics youth team manager.

Bruce and Watson played together and became great mates whilst at Norwich before going their separate ways to Manchester United and Everton to become great rivals for many years.

Watson started his career as an apprentice at Liverpool but after failing to make one appearance he signed for Norwich City in 1980 and went on to make 256 appearances scoring 15 goals.

In 1986 Everton signed Watson for a then club record £900,000 and he stayed at with the Goodison Park club for the next 15 years before leaving in May 2001 to manage Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers.

Whilst at Everton Watson made a staggering 529 appearances in all competitions scoring a creditable 38 goals, not bad for a centre half.

Watson said on his new challenge at the Latics:

'You have to take these opportunities when they come around, and I am very excited about joining what is clearly a club going places.

'I think we have a very healthy crop of youngsters here, who have obviously been well coached in the past.

'Hopefully, one or two of them can start making steps towards breaking through into a higher level.'
