Mario Melchiot Called up to Dutch Squad

Mario Melchiot Called up to Dutch Squad

Wigan Athletic captain Mario Melchiot has been called up to the Holland Euro Championship provisional squad for this summers tournament even though he is still carrying an injury that kept him out of the last two games of the season, away at Aston Villa and at home to Manchester United.

Super Mario will join up with their international teammates for a pre-tournament training camp in Noordwijk, after which coach Marco van Basten will reduce his squad to the 23 permitted players.

Former Latics midfield star Denny Landzaat, now at Feyenoord is also named in the squad

Holland have been drawn in the so-called 'Group of Death' for the competition in Austria and Switzerland, alongside France, Italy and Romania. Their first game is against Italy on June 9.

Provisional 29-man Netherlands squad:

Goalkeepers: Sander Boschker (FC Twente), Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United FC), Maarten Stekelenburg (AFC Ajax), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord).
