Wigan - The close of an eventful season.

Wigan - The close of an eventful season.

Another season in the rollercoaster world of Wigan Athletic draws to a close. A season that saw us hit the top of the table after four matches, then go on a run of defeats which sent us plummeting to next to bottom only one place above Derby and resulted in the sacking of Chris Hutchins and the re-appointment of Steve Bruce.

Bruce managed to turn the club around securing 32 points to take us to 40 points and fourteenth place in the Premier League and giving us mid table safety and renewed optimism for next season.

What of the players, how have they performed this season?

Chris Kirkland…8.5

Players player of the year, only missed one game through injury and has been called up into the England squad twice this season.

Pulled off some superb saves this season and his re-signing for another four years is a major fillip for the team.

Mario Melchiot…8.5

Captain Fantastic, not only the most skilful right back in the Premier League but a natural leader.

Whatever fans think of Chris Hutchins he managed to convince Mario to sign for us and for that he should have our eternal thanks.

Kevin Kilbane…7

Totally dependable, gave 100% in every game which was recognised by the fans when voting him into the top three in the Player of the Year awards.

His age and lack of pace go against him but one of the nice guys in the Prem.

Titus Bramble…6.5

Unfairly maligned in my opinion. Made two mistakes all season and was absolutely pilloried for them. Many other players made far more mistakes but were not given such negative publicity.

Titus came back in near the end of the season and showed he has the temperament and class to be a force to reckon with in the Prem.

Paul Scharner…8.5

Went from pantomime villain with his comments re Hutchins on his website to superhero with his performances under Steve Bruce.

Fans player of the season, a total one off, hopefully he will sign a contract extension.

Ryan Taylor…6.5

Nice guy, good at set pieces with a powerful shot but I`m not convinced he has the pace or skill to make it in the Premier League.

Antonio Valencia…8

The most skilful outlet in the team. Has the potential to become a top player in the world but needs to shoot more often.

Wilson Palacios…8.5

What a revelation. Came from nowhere(well Birmingham but you know what I mean) skilful and tenacious, can`t wait for the celebration when he scores a goal.

The number of Honduran flags on view at the JJB at the end of the season show what the fans think of him.

Michael Brown…8

I`m glad he plays for us as I would hate him if he plays for anyone else.

Koumas…5

A disappointment, has so much skill which he displays for Wales but for us….

Heskey…6.5

Struggled for fitness all season and lack of support from a credible striking partner.

Bent…6

Wasteful in front of goal and I`m not convinced he is the answer for the striker problems.

Marlon King…5.5

Doesn`t look a Premier League player to me

Emerson Boyce…7.5

Disappeared without trace but came back with a vengeance. The understated hero of the team.

Erik Edman…7

Fitted right in which coincided with a run of clean sheets. A horrendous injury.

Andreas Granqvist…5.5

Too slow for the Premier League

Antoine Siberski…6.5

Scored some crucial goals none more so than Derby away but age and fitness are against him playing more than a bit part in proceedings.

Josip Skoko…6

Never let us down. Goes with our best wishes

Julius Agahahowa…4

No comment needed

Salomen Olembe…4

See Agahahowa

Maynor Figueroa…6.5

Didn`t let Ronaldo get away from him on his debut. Definitely one we need to sign.

Mike Pollitt…6

Did well in his one start for the first team. A true professional.

All in all another season which tested blood pressure medication to its limits. With the nucleus of the team we have the grounds for confidence for the future are there.

Good report agree with most things but I I think Marlon King will come good

Good report, especially on Heskey. He is a big figure in our team, but fitness lets him down. Agree on Bent, not what we need. I still think Ryan Taylor will be a big asset for Wigan.

Yup spot on, but also think RyanT is premiership quality, just needs like Scharner to realise his strengths.
