'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Happy Anniversary Wigan Athletic

The 2nd June will always have a special place in the heart of Latics fans for 30 years ago today at the AGM of the Football League Wigan Athletic had a wish granted, election to the 4th tier of English football

The Latics had finished the season as runners up in the Northern Premier League behind Boston United, whose ground was deemed unfit for League football so Latics went through to the election process in their place.

After the first round of ballots Latics tied on 22 votes with Southport, who had finished next to bottom of the then division four, the bottom four clubs had to re-apply for election to the league in those days.

It went to a sudden death vote off between Latics and Southport for a place in the football league for season 1978/79, Latics won by five votes and the rest as they say is history

So happy anniversary Wigan Athletic, after a rocky start things are certainly going well at the moment.

Its hard to believe its only been 30 years. Following Doncaster I got to see a lot of your early years. Remember you turning us over 6-3 at Belle Vue in a midweek game in the early 80's.
