Latics in talks with Mensah

Vital Wigan understand that talks are at an advanced stage with Rennes defender John Mensah and he could become a record signing by the Latics for a defender.

Rennes originally quoted Wigan Athletic a fee of 7.5 million but after negotiations it is settled at 5 million, now all Bruce needs to do is convince the highly rated Ghana international that the Latics are a club on the rise.

Mensah wants to come to England and he is quoted as saying that because his family are from England thats where he wants to be.

With former Rennes defenders Mario Melchiot and Erik Edman already at the JJB, Mensah just might find the move to sunny Lancashire appealing.

This would be a good signing if it comes off

What bothers me is what happens to Latics during the Africa Nations.

Whats positive about this deal is that he is involved in the African nations cup, otherwise he would be targeted by many more teams.

The ACN really is only about 3-5 weeks every two years. I think it's totally worth it. Would you say Essien or Drogba are bad signings because they have to go every couple of years??

Good point avantsweater

I think that the ANC probably decided the PL winner this year (along with Latics, of course).

Mensah is a good signing for any premiership club... Personally I hope he comes to Pompey ... but I would say that !
