This is the type of thing that fairytales are made of, at least where Wigan Athletic fans are concerned. Wigan's FOURTH season in the Premier League. WHAT an achievement. However, a lot has happened since then and any fairytales can be brushed to one side because ladies and gentlemen, this is the REAL deal.
Wigan had a wonderful season in the EPL (English Premier League) the first time round. They proved pundits wrong all throughout the world with their hard-working, no-nonsense approach and finished a respectable 10th in the table, perhaps even beyond the expectations of their own fans.
However, Wigan took a bad turn in the second season but Paul Jewell and the team came together to avoid relegation thanks to a wonderful performance at Sheffield. Emile Heskey in particular stood out and Latics looked forward to a third season, a really wonderful achievement in itself.
A promising start to campaign three went sour in the Autumn and Winter and resulted in the sacking of then manager Chris Hutchings. The timing couldn't have been more inspired as far as the club were concerned, even though there were generally no hard feelings towards Chris Hutchings. Steve Bruce took over and the revolution begun, with the Latics finishing in 14th place and FINALLY ending their jinx against top four clubs. For that, Titus Bramble will make Latics history as the first ever player to register the club a point. After a goalless draw against Arsenal, Emile Heskey stunned Chelsea with an injury-time winner to stop Chelsea winning the title.
Wigan showed in the final games they're not a club that are little any more, as if they were, but a team showing real promise and hopefully, with their current squad, they will push on and perhaps even stun a few more skepticals next season and have a season like they did first time round, if not better.
