Ray Mathias will be back in Wigan

Former Wigan Athletic boss Ray Mathias is set to join Paul Ince at Ewood Park and become the Blackburn Rovers assistant manager, a role he carried out under Ince at MK Dons and Macclesfield Town.

Mathias was, in my opinion, one of the best managers that the Latics have ever had, we enjoyed two very successful spells under his leadership and on both occasions gentleman Ray was undoubtedly treated unfairly by the club.

Latics swept to the quarter finals of the FA cup in 1987 only to be beaten by Leeds United at Springfield Park, that season also saw Mathias` men compete in the play offs only to lose out to Swindon Town, being 2-0 up after 20 minutes Swindon came back to win the game 2-3.

Mathias was also in charge during Wigan Athletics last season at Springfield Park, a season that had a Wembley win, the Auto Windscreen Trophy and another play off defeat, this time to Manchester City

The defeat against City saw Mathias lose his job, very unfairly considering the circumstances of the defeat and the quality of football that had been played by the Latics that season.

The mention of Ray Mathias conjures up some special memories for myself and I can only wish him 'all the best` for his long overdue venture in the Premiership.
