Wigan Athletic - Sour grapes leave a bitter taste

Wigan Athletic - Sour grapes leave a bitter taste

Birmingham City 'owner` David Gold has had right old dig at Wigan Athletic during an interview given to the Birmingham Post and he reveals that they (Brum) have reported Latics to the Premier League for 'poaching` and are seeking compensation.

Gold says its not sour grapes, yeah right, and its due to the Latics poaching their coaching staff that got them relegated!

During the interview Gold says:

"They took Steve Bruce, OK we got compensation, then Eric Black then our goalkeeping coach, then someone else, then someone else. Then you look around and there is nobody left"

"The Premier League clearly states you are not allowed to do that, you are not allowed to poach other people`s staff. Where does it stop? Just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water they took somebody else. What do we want? Compensation."

Well didn`t Paul Jewell take all of our coaching staff over to Derby County, Gary Megson took his own into Bolton and without doubt Alex McLeish took his own guys to Birmingham, coaching staff move around.

Gold continues:

"Wigan got all the benefits and we got all of the costs"

"They are in the Premier League and we are not. It is all very well saying we got £3 million for Steve but we got relegated because of that."

Well then Mr Gold you should have tied Bruce down to a new contract, at the time it looked like Bruce was going to lose his job with the debacle that was the sale of Birmingham to some foreign investor, that ones down to you.

Gold continues:

"We went for weeks and weeks and weeks when we did not win a game. We only had to win one of those and we would still be in the Premier League."

That bit is true, but the reason that you went weeks without a win was because you were crap.

Gold continues:

"It is not sour grapes. All of these people had to be replaced and most of them have cost us. You either have to pay compensation to a club or to a person to convince them to relocate."

"We got compensation for Steve but that was a deal just for Steve. We set a fee hoping they would go away like Bolton went away"

"We pitched a figure we thought would satisfy Steve but at the same time we hoped it would put Wigan off. It was only for Steve not the rest of the staff."

"While people are saying we got £3 million that does not allow Wigan to rape and pillage for the next 20 years. That is not on."

That sounds mental to me, if someone comes and says can I buy your house, I wouldn`t turn around and say x number of pounds buys it, I would say, no go away my house isnt for sale.

If Gold and Birmingham didn`t want to lose Bruce then why didn`t they tell Latics no when they asked if they could speak to him, simple.

Gold continues:

"I believe Dave Whelan has acted very properly over the Steve Bruce affair. I do not question his integrity at all but is he aware his people have taken several of our staff?"

Ok then why talk about poaching when everyone knows anything that happens at Wigan Athletic goes through Whelan?

The Birmingham Post then goes onto say:

"Whelan has also lured Olivier Kapo, Daniel De Ridder and Wilson Palacios to Wigan, though Birmingham could receive more than £3 million for Kapo if the French international shows form and fitness"

These guys are so far up their own its unbelievable, Kapo was bought for more than Birmingham paid for him, De Ridder was released and Palacios wasn`t even their player, they did have first option to buy him though and they turned this down.

There is an old saying 'if you live in a glass house don`t throw stones` I can imagine Cardiff City would like to make a few comments regarding the Marcus Bent affair.

To say this is not sour grapes is a joke, the bitterness that comes out is sickening

Birmingham blew their own survival in much the same way as Reading did only Reading arent blaming others for their fall they are focusing all their efforts on rebuilding and getting back to the Premier League.

Steve Bruce is manager of Wigan Athletic not Birmingham City end of story, he was sold like a commodity because he was under contract and if Birmingham had really wanted to keep him he would still be there today.

Don`t blame others for your own poor judgement

As a Blues fan I am embarrassed by the quotes attributed to David Gold. It is common knowledge in the Birmingham area that Steve Bruce's days were numbered @Blues anyway because of the crap football spoken about that we were playing BEFORE he left. Therefore to get rid of him without paying compensation PLUS being given money seems like good business to me. As for the rest of the background staff being "poached"..I agree, this is quite normal in football. If a Club values its Staff it ensures that they are ALL on water-tight contracts to ensure adequate compensation if those contracts are broken. There is NO WAY Black, Bertchin or Spink would've survived @BCFC when a new manager came in as they too were partly responsible for our "crap" football and results. Good luck to Wigan, I think they will need it!!

Cheers for that OldburyBlue, maybe Gold is looking for a scapegoat following relegation, it certainly sounds like it, tbh I thought you would have survived, but wasnt meant to be, Bruce made a big difference when he came to the JJB, maybe like Jewell at Wigan Bruce had outsyaed his time at St.Andrews and both club and manager needed a change to freshen things up
