Wigan Athletic - No more spending for Bruce

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce says that he is delighted with his current squad of players and that he has built a good side to take on the rest of the Premier League.

Latics have brought in 4 new players during the summer Daniel De Ridder, Olivier Kapo, Amr Zaki and Lee Catermole and have also extended the stay of loanee Maynor Figueroa for a further 6 months.

Unfortunately for Bruce though is an injury to inspirational defender Paul Scharner who was carried off during Tuesday nights six nil win at Championship side Barnsley.

Scharner landed heavily and appeared to twist his ankle calling immediately for attention from the bench.

Any lay off will be a worry with the Austrian in superb form at the end of last season Scharner is the main stay of the Latics defence.

Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post:

'Our squad has a good depth to it. I'm delighted with what I've done, and I would have thought that is the end of our shopping.

'But we'll have to see how Scharner is. We haven't got a lot of cover at the back with Erik Edman being out at the moment. It's a concern.'

Of course Vital Wigan will keep you updated on the extent of Scharners injury

WE would miss him but this news is also worrying Wigan baffled by Zamalek over Zaki's ITC By Omar AbdelAziz First Published: July 30, 2008 CAIRO: Wigan Athletic are not happy by Zamalek's stalling over Amr Zaki's International Transfer License (ITC), according to the striker's agent. Wigan have been waiting for Zaki's ITC from Zamalek since for a week, following the Premiership side completed al required payments. However, Zamalek are yet to complete their part of the deal, much to the disarray of the Latics officials. "Wigan officials are astonished that Zamalek have not sent the ITC until now, especially that the 1.2 million English pounts transfer fee was paid in full last week," agent Nader Shawki told FilGoal.com from England. "I was asked about it several times and unfortunately I couldn’t find the answer. "They told me that this is something that happened for the first time in the history of the club. ... I have also spoken to manager Steve Bruce and he insists that Zaki will not play in friendlies unless he is officially registered." Zaki was forced to sit out Wigan's 6-0 friendly win over Barnsley on Tuesday, as they prepare to take on Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday. Zaki has finally completed his protracted transfer to Wigan last week, in a deal described by the English club's official website as the one of the longest ever.
