'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Eric Black Speaks on Potential New Signings

Wigan Athletic assistant boss Eric Black has spoken about the possibility of bringing in new players to the club before the transfer window shuts at the end of this month, Black said:

'We'll probably wait to see how things go in the first few games and take things from there, see if we need to do something before the window shuts."

Black feels that the squad that he and Steve Bruce inherited and the signings that the Latics have made this summer stand them in good stead for the season ahead though they need to see how they fare in the early matches, he said:

'I think in general we have strengthened the squad well, although you only get the true picture once you start playing league matches."

'We have tried to bring different elements to it without going away from the magnificent form the boys showed in the second half of last season.'

'At the end of last season we sat down and had a good look at the squad, looked at areas which needed strengthening."

'There's always the temptation to bring in six or seven new players, especially when everyone else seems to be doing that.'

'But we have a belief in the players who were already here, when we looked at the results and the statistics, there were a lot of good things. We were a little bit frightened of changing too much.'

'The new lads have settled very well.'

'Myself and Steve knew Kapo and de Ridder very well from Birmingham...we knew what type of lads they were."

'They don't have a problem with the language which is a big help, but it's harder for Zaki in that respect."

'But his attitude and mentality means the other lads have taken him to their hearts straight away. He's desperate to do well and they like that.'

So are the Latics going to bring in any new players before the window shuts, I`d say most definitely and I am sure that behind the scenes there is frantic work going on in a couple of deals, watch this space

I predict two more before the end of the month...I hope so any way because we need cover at the back and at the front

You are right there but kapo can play up front I dn't know i've got a sneaking suspition about jimmy b. He's happy where he is and it will take around 6 million to even consider letting him go. But there stalling on giving him a contract If kapo can play upfront he's compition for midfield and it will be around 4 in central midfield FINGERS CROSSED

I think that 'wait and see' is a pretty fair approach, provided that there is some idea of who can be approached with success, and there is no scrabbling around at the last minute trying to get cover. One takes the point that there's no big reason to suppose that Titus B. will not perform well, most of the time at least. But now that King has gone, surely there must be another deal for a striker anyway.
