Damian Francis Forced to Retire

Former Wigan Athletic midfield man Damian Francis has been forced to retire from the professional game at the age of 29 due to a serious knee injury picked up playing for Watford against Manchester City in April 2007.

Francis signed for the Latics in the summer of 2005 from Norwich City and made his debut in Latics first ever Premier League match against Chelsea and he almost scored clipping the bar late on in the game.

The London born former Wimbledon player scored his first and only goal for the Latics in the away win at Goodison Park against Everton in September 2005 and went on to make 20 appearances that season before being sold to Watford for £1.5 million in July 2006.

The midfield man has broken down several times whilst trying to make his come back from the injury and Francis told the Watford Football Club official website:

'I'm devastated to have to accept the decision to announce my retirement, but I have been strongly advised by my surgeon that I cannot continue to put my knee through such trauma.'

Good luck for the future Damo from all at Vital Latics
