Latics Reserves 2-1 Newcastle Reserves

Latics Reserves 2-1 Newcastle Reserves

Wigan Athletic reserve side, under the leadership of Keith Bertschin, continued their progress following last weeks victory over Manchester United by beating Newcastle United by two goals to one at Robin Park Arena this evening.

Matty Hampson recovered from injury to take his place in Latics starting line up alongside Polish duo Kupisz and Cwyka in midfield.

Latics fell behind when Nile Ranger hit a fantastic volley past Postlethwaite in the Latics goal on 23 minutes but we were level on the stroke of half time when Joe Holt latched onto a superb through ball from Tomasz Cywka and coolly finished past Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal

Latics won the game with a wonder goal from Jon Routledge who went on a mazy run through the Newcastle defence, before cutting back and looping the ball around veteran keeper Steve Harper from the edge of the box.

Latics reserves boss Keith Bertschin was thrilled with the result and said:

'The boys really hard for this and I thought as a team were superb once again. Newcastle were a strong team but we kept battling and our finishing on the night was the difference.'

Latics team:

Postlethwaite, Field, Pearson, Meace, Mustoe, Hampson (Breeze 78), Routledge, Holt, Kupisz, Cwyka, Mahon.
Subs: Gracey, Kirkbride, Prince

Newcastle team:

Harper, Morris, Edgar, Tozer, Folan, Godsmark, Marwood, Doninger, Ameobi, Ranger, Donaldson
Subs: Taverner, Johnson, Newton, McCruden, McGlaughlin
