Latics Speyk to Liverpool

Latics Speyk to Liverpool

In the run up to this afternoons game I managed to grab a few words with Vital Liverpool ed Chubby Alonso over a brew and a big plate of biscuits

Hi Chubby and thanks for doing this interview with us today

How long have you been a Liverpool supporter Chubby?

As long as I can remember!

Have you been pleased with your start to the season?

Joint top of the league, into the fourth round of the Carling Cup and the Group stages of the Champions League (with a good start to this!) life isn't bad as a Reds fan at the moment is in.

How's life under Rafa?

I'm happier this season, as he seems to have remembered that the league season begins in August and runs through until May. In the past he's seemed to have thought it started properly in the New Year!

In recent seasons he has chopped and changed the side so much that we haven't been able to get off to a good start, and this has left us well off the pace by the time the second half of the season comes around when we really kick on. A fairly settled team selection this season is helping a lot, as results and our league position show.

Are you happy with your summer signings?

I'd say yes overall. We paid too much for Robbie Keane, but everyone has to pay over the odds these days. Not so sold on the full backs we've bought in though, but time will tell.

It would've been nice if we could've signed Gareth Barry as we wanted, but I'd still preferred to keep Xabi Alonso as opposed to losing him to sign Barry in truth.

Who should the Latics fans watch out for in the Liverpool team?

Is it boasting to say who shouldn't you watch out for?

I'm not being bigheaded but we're full of world-class performers aren't we. Stevie Gerrard should be boosted by his goal for England on Wednesday, even though he also missed a sitter, so as usually he'll be a threat. Missing Fernando Torres is a setback, but we have players that can come in, and have already managed without him once this season.

What are your aspirations for Liverpool this new season?

Winning the league would be brilliant as it's been too long since I last saw us do that, but I'm not sure we will this season?

So finishing even closer to the eventual winner and winning a Cup would do me. If we're still there or thereabouts in the New Year then I might have a rethink!

How do you feel the Latics will do this season?

You'll do fine, I think you'll be around mid-table maybe bordering on a top half finish as Steve Bruce has signed some good players in his time with you so far and has got you playing well as a team.

Would you take Heskey back and why?

I like Emile Heskey and think that he is underrated, he showed for England recently how good he is but still didn't get all the plaudits he deserved. When we had him here I don't really think he was given the real respect he deserved.

He isn't the type of forward that will score 10-20, or more, goals a season very often is he but the goals he helps others to score make up for it.

I don't think he would be a regular starter if he came back though, and Robbie Keane holds up the ball well but also scores which probably makes him the better partner for Torres. I'd not say no, but can't see it happening.

If you had to pick one of the current Latics players to be in your squad who would it be and why?

Wilson Palacios I'd say, as he seems to be getting better and better. He's attracting a lot of interest, even being linked with us, but looks like he might be going to ManU sometime in the future?

Who do you think will finish in the top 4 and bottom 3 this season?

I think it will be the usual top four, but wouldn't write off someone new gate crashing the party! What order I'd not like to say at the moment, but I do think Chelsea could be the team that wins the league? But we'll see where we are at Christmas!

Bottom three Stoke, Bolton and Hull (not sure about the order)

Prediction for Liverpool Vs Latics?

Stoke frustrated us at home earlier in the season, we cant afford any more slip-ups (no offence meant) so I my prediction is Liverpool 2 Wigan 0.

Can you spot Chubby here?

Thanks for the chat Chubby really enjoyed the fact that you are predicting Bolton for the drop, nice one

I agree... Wilson Palacios is amazing. I hope he can stay some more time with us, the fans love him but Steve and everybody else knows it's too difficult to keep someone of that caliber when you have teams like Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool looking to sign him.
