Latics Reserves Lose at Sunderland


Wigan Athletic reserves saw their recent good form come to an abrupt end with a 2-0 defeat away at Sunderland this evening in front of a crowd of almost 2,500

Sunderland had Trinidad and Tobago star Kenwyne Jones making his comeback from injury whilst the Latics fielded a young side with only Mike Pollitt having any real first team experience.

Sunderland took the lead shortly before half time with a goal from left back Michael Liddle and they made it 2-0 in the second half with substitute David Dowson scoring for the Black Cats

The Latics came closest to scoring through Tomasz Cywka and Joe Holt but they had their efforts blocked

Latics reserve boss Keith Bertschin was disappointed with the result but delighted with the performance he said:

'A few weeks ago, we may have fallen apart but there's real resolve and belief in the side at the moment and they kept battling away looking for a way back in.'

Bertschin also thought centre half Lewis Field, who had the unenviable task of marking Jones had a good game, he commented:

'I thought he had a really good game and he's come on leaps and bounds over the past few months.

'Overall then, I'd say I was disappointed to lose but there was still a lot to smile about and it shows this team is moving in the right direction.'
