German 'Wigan' after Benitez

Hoffenheim's rise through the German leagues is even more remarkable than the Latics.

In the early 90's, Wigan were in the 3rd and 4th tiers of football in England, whilst Hoffenheim were an amateur club in the 8th of German football. Thats the equivalent of, say Ossett Albion of the Unibond league North attaining Premier League status.

Hoffenheim, spent only one season in the second tier of German football and finished second, earning automatic promotion to the Bundesliga.

Hoffenheim are currently second in the Bundesliga, on goal difference from the leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

It is to be hoped that Benitez's friendship with Valencia, plus the prospect of playing in the Premier League will entice Benitez to Wigan.

As 1899 are my adoptive local team i feel i should comment :o) A quick look on a couple of german forums suggests that the general consensus with Hoffenheim's fans is that they should concentrate on bolstering their defence. Though their current strikers may well soon be poached; we were even linked to one of them not so long back! HOWEVER, this guy is apparently out injured for a few months so splashing the cash on him may not be the best move in the short term for us anyway.

i've watched a few ecuador games (just to see valencia) and i have noticed their two front men including benitez, but not really for good reasons. no pace, no touch, can't shoot. i'm sure they will be brilliant at wigan. NOT!!
