Young Latics Crash Out

Young Latics Crash Out

A young Wigan Athletic side lost in the first round of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup to a very experienced Morecambe side 2-1 at Christie Park last night

Following a goalless first half ex-Leigh RMI man Michael Twiss opened the scoring two minutes into the second half with a close range header from David Artell's assist. Twiss then bagged a second 16 minutes from time after a superb run and through ball from substitute Matty Poole played him behind the Latics defence.

Latics hit back on 81 minutes when the superb Matty Hampson hit a 25 yard shot that took a deflection past Morecambe keeper Edge leaving him with no chance of stopping it.

The Latics fought for an equaliser but it was Morecambe who came closest with Twiss having a penalty superbly saved by the impressive Neil Postlethwaite in the Latics goal.

Latics were on on top for most of the first half with Joe Holt shooting wide from the edge of the area after Tomasz Cywka's neat reverse pass with the latter forcing Lewis Edge into a excellent tip over.

It wasn`t to be and good luck to Morecambe for the rest of the competition.

For the record the teams were:

Morecambe:

Edge
McCann, Bell, Artell, Parrish, Curtis
Hunter (Poole 63), Carr, Twiss
O'Carroll, Taylor.

Subs not used: Lloyd, Yates, Stone, Bee.

Latics:

Redmond, Ashworth, Kupisz (rep Breeze 75), Hampson
Cywka, Holt.

Subs not used: Field, Gracey, Buxton, Kirkbride.
