Wigan Athletic are bracing themselves as Liverpool prepare to make a £4 million bid for England centre forward Emile Heskey that would surely see the big man leave the Latics and return to Merseyside.
Latics boss Steve Bruce has said that he will not allow Heskey to leave on the cheap but with his contract out in the summer and a replacement already lined-up with Hugo Rodallega due at the JJB next week £4 million might just be enough to let the former Liverpool striker return to Anfield.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is desperate to bring in a forward that he can rely on and one that is also eligible for Champions League football, Heskey fits the bill on both accounts
The £4 million fee is a take it or leave it amount and Liverpool do face competition from Aston Villa but the pull of his old club and another crack at the top European club tournament is just too much for Heskey to turn down
Liverpool are strapped for cash and they hope to part fund the Heskey fee by selling off bit player Jermaine Pennant who himself has been rumoured to have been a target for the Latics but Bruce put paid to that and said he is not interested in the former Birmingham and Arsenal player
Another factor in this equation is Latics Chairman Dave Whelan, Heskey was bought for £5 million from Birmingham 3 years ago and Whelan being the fiscal genius that he is will want to see at least some of that outlay recouped and a sizeable chunk like the one on offer may be too much for him to turn away
For the Heskey lovers at the Latics the next two games could be the last ones that they get to see their hero play in the famous blue and white stripes with Liverpool hoping for an early completion of the deal by the end of next week at the latest putting Heskey out of the FA cup tie at Spurs
