Paul Jewell On the Dole Again

Ex-Wigan Athletic manager and player Paul Jewell has resigned as manager of Championship club Derby County following their 1-0 home defeat to Ipswich Town at Pride Park yesterday.

Jewell was in charge of Derby for a little over 12 months and he had a disastrous time at the helm of the East Midlands club gaining just one win as manager last season and that was in a penalty shoot-out against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.

Following Derby`s inevitable relegation from the Premier League last May it was assumed that Jewell would weave his magic this season and take the Rams back to the Promised Land, unfortunately it hasn`t worked out that way.

Although he has guided the club to the semi-final of the Carling Cup it`s Derby`s league form that is creating great cause for concern and they sit in 18th spot in the table looking more like relegation candidates than promotion challengers.

Former Latics boss Chris Hutchings has been placed in temporary charge of the first team though a return for former Derby boss Billy Davies is very much on the cards.

It looks like the Latics got the best out of Jewell but you don`t become a bad manager over night, maybe he has lost some of that hunger that he showed at Wigan and previously at Bradford or maybe he is better suited to clubs that don`t have expectations to out strip their resources.

I enjoyed my visit to Pride Park last season and I was hoping they would come back up again, looks like he jumped before he was pushed
