Was Palacios Eligible to Play for Spurs?

Former Wigan Athletic midfield man Wilson Palacios made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur against Bolton Wanderers yesterday but surely he was suspended and therefore ineligible to play.

Palacios picked up his 10th booking of the season in Wigan Athletics game at Eastlands on 17th January and thus instigating an automatic 2 match ban, if he had stayed at the Latics Palacios would have missed the Liverpool game last Wednesday and yesterdays visit to Aston Villa.

He left the Latics on the 21st of January for Spurs, still with a two game suspension hanging over him.

In the time since signing Palacios Spurs have played Burnley away in the Carling Cup, that wont count because Palacios is ineligible having featured for the Latics in that competition, then Spurs faced Manchester United in the FA cup again Palacios had already featured this time he actually played against Spurs.

The next game for Tottenham was the 3-1 home win against Stoke City on Tuesday 27th January and this was the first fixture that Wilson Palacios served part of his punishment the next game was yesterdays visit to the Reebok and by my reckoning that would have given Palacios his second game suspension, but he played?

Strange that a suspension could be overlooked by the Tottenham administration if there is a reason that he played I would love to hear it but I thought that the rules said 10 bookings two game suspension and those two games the player had to be eligible to play in also

Lets wait and see what happens

OOooh another West Ham scenario
worbo
knowing us, no he wasn't! I really don't understand how he was eligable, but apparently, even though he was cup-tied in the FA cup, it counted as one of the games?!?! Time will tell, but if we do lose points, thats us out of the league!
Dave the Yid
get a life, the club arent that thick and the ref would have known even if we didnt, the cup counts! crap artical that sticks of desperate!!!!
Morgan.
Thank goodness for this article because I've said nothing else since he joined the club. I was just looking forward to him, playing next week. Had no idea he would play yesterday.
Mike_THFC
Slow news day?
GuySpur
Slow news day? Not really just hoping some one could answer a burniong quezzie with us Wiganers and Morgan the club ARE that thick or Maritn Jol would still be in charge
worbo
You do have to assume that we wouldn't have been naive enough to play him without clearing it with the FA, but then it is strange how competitions that a player is not eligable to play in count towards the suspension? You may aswell arrange a couple of friendlies against your reserves to clear a suspension? Would be nice if the FA could issue a statement to clear this up, jst like they did over the Defoe incident vs Burnley
Dave the Yid
Im a Spurs fan and when we signed him i thought he wouldnt be available until we play Arsenal. Surely Arry couldnt make the same mistake twice!! Could he?
fiftypeehead
Don't worry - he's not your player any more so it's not your concern.
Chris Hart
No Latics fan, and by the sound of it most Spurs fans, expected Palacios to play yesterday, an explanation is needed.
eh?
You wrong I am afraid, players are not 'Cup Tied' in the Carling Cup, only Europe and FA Cup it seems, that is why Defoe could and did play for us at the second leg at Burnley, so he had played out his ban if you like.
stu_u2k
stu-u2K- You are incorrect, the cup-tied system works across all cup competitions, Defoe was allowed to play for you because he didn't appear in the competition for Pompey, he was an unused sub
TonyH2
From my understanding unused sub or not because he was in the match day squad he was 'selected' hmm. Well one thing I think we can all safely say then is that nobody is clear on the situation.
stu_u2k
That matters not because you played Burnley on the 21st and Palacios signed for you on the 22nd
worbo
He had signed before the 16:30 deadline though so he could have played if it wasnt for his suspension, but chimbonda missed it by 15 minutes so couldnt play.
stu_u2k
Thats quite interesting, coz youd think that the FA would never allow something like that, however its not as if it helped us, whats the punishment going to be, givng us no points for a game we lost? and you can be cup-tied in the carling cup, Defoe hadnt played for Portsmouth in their games so he was eligible, just like Woodgate last season.
superyido
The result of the game doesn't matter, it will be seen as breaking the rules so a punishment should be applied, the severity is what should be of concern. A points deduction would be a huge blow.
TonyH2
spurs play by their own rules anyway - defoe returning within a year, chimbonda after 6-months or so, so much for that 'you cannot return within a year' ruling...
if you are ineligable for a cup game that does not count against a suspension, in that case it appears that palacios should not have played yesterday. defoe did not get on against chelski in the league cup, hence not being cup-tied. being named in a squad does not cup-tie you, unless you feature - he did not, hence no cup-tied defoe in the league cup.
pompeyrug
I really hope Spurs can't be that stupid....
RVTSpurs
The first game didnt matter ffs! The first game he was still a wigan player due to work permits, without a work permit he couldnt play for us so was reg at wigan still! a work permit doesnt move with the player! so missing one wigan game and one spurs game meant he searved his ban! The club and the ref arent that thick!!!
Morgan.
Confident there Morgan...if his work permit was through BEFORE January 28th then you are fecked because that was our first game from the City when he recieved his 10th booking....If he recieved his clearence after the 28th then like you say he served his first with us unfortunately his 2nd with you would have been the Bolton game so you are still fecked
worbo
to clarify worbo's point. Palacios accrued ten bookings thereby earning a two match suspension. I he was a Wigan player until say Friday he could have only served one match of a two match suspension as we only played Liverpool in that time so he was susupended yesterday and you played him. If he was a Spurs player before thta he was cuptied for both FA and Carling Cup having played in both so the Stoke game was the first and he was suspended for the Bolton game in which you played him. Either way...as Worbo put it , you're fecked
baskerville
The noises coming from 'other' places say that he is allowed to serve his suspension in cup games that he is ineligible to play in, if true utter nonesens and what a joke, next they'll be able to get through suspensions by not playing in reserve games
worbo
Surely you aren't still bitter that he left??
Ghod
Not bitter at all just surprised, btw Wilson left the Latics on excellent terms, he is an exceprional player, a gentleman and a real character, just surprised that he didnt serve his two match ban thats all
worbo
You think the club and the FA officials dont check these things before the team goes out?? Of course they do!
Morgan.
Palacios was forced out of the club. We're not bitter at all as we made £13m profit on him in less than 12 months and will hopefully tie up a deal for a big money signing today. He's not worth the money you paid. We offered him a new contract which he was happy to accept until City got involved. Poor move for Wilson but he'll learn.
