Latics in Europe? Bruce Thinks So

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce hasn`t discounted the clubs chances of qualifying for a spot in the new Uefa Europa League which will start next season even though some members of the upper echelons of the Latics don`t fancy the idea.

Getting a point from Saturdays game against Fulham coupled with West Hams defeat at home to Manchester United leaves the Latics still in touching distance with Everton and the possibility of European qualification.

When asked about where the season is going Steve Bruce said the first priority is the 40 point safety mark, Latics are now on 34 so that is achievable, then he turned his attention the possibility of the unthinkable in some peoples minds, Europe.

Bruce told the media on Saturday:

"Forty points is usually enough to stay up, but I still want to see if we can bed the team in quickly and, if we can, who knows?

"We have some big games coming up, which are winnable, and we have a really good record at home. We played poorly against Fulham and still got a point, so you never know."

Well the manager is showing some ambition

It's harder this year to get in it without the intertoto. We all need to hope United beat spurs in the CC final, and one of the top 5 win the FA Cup, or it will be 5th you have to finish to get in it.

I hope United trounce Spurs to be honest, I fancy your lot for the FA cup Mike

I think that less than 40pts will secure survival this season, especially when you see fixtures for the rivals.

There's 5 teams above us in the league and we've already been drawn against 2 of them in 3 rounds lol. If we beat Villa I'd fancy us to at least make the final, although we'll inevitably get Arsenal next round, then Chelsea, then United... To be honest I'd back us to beat anyone at Goodison right now in the cup, but we'll see. Our odds for the cup are about 11/1 right now, which represents fair value IMO. If Chelsea/Arsenal/United keep resting players we're as good a bet as anyone.
