JJB Soccerdome Ref Disallows Ronaldo Goal

Whilst watching yesterdays FA Cup game between Derby County and Manchester United I noticed the assistant referee and he looked very familiar, but the camera just flashed past him so I thought no more about it.

Then Ronaldo scored and the flag was raised, camera focuses on the assistant with his arm a loft, is it, no, yes it is, it`s Paul Tierney the Wigan lad who used to referee down at the Wigan JJB Soccerdome on a Monday night

Well I couldn`t believe my eyes Paul Tierney disallowing a Ronaldo goal, now let me tell you that Ronaldo is in very good company because in the Hindley Borough Vs San Miguel game a few years ago yours truly had 3 screamers disallowed by Paul Tierney so whats good for worbo is good for Ronaldo

Nice lad is Paul and its good to see him on the TV, plus he made the right decision with Ronaldo but not with mine, here is an interview that Paul carried out with the refworld.com website (yes there is such a website):

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I got into refereeing by going along to a local course after seeing an FA recruitment poster at a local sports club.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Promotion to the select group and refereeing Hindley Borough

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

2008 Play Off Semi-Final 2nd Leg - Rochdale v Darlington. The sell out crowd made for an excellent atmosphere. The Hindley Borough Vs San Miguel game was a close 2nd, that worbo is some player

What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?

To constantly improve through hard work and listening to advice

What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?

High level of physical fitness to keep up with play, being mentally strong so that you can remain calm in pressure situations and learn from each game.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

My wife and children for being so supportive, two local referees, Darren Bond and Peter Gooch for their support and friendship over the years and Eddie Wolstenholme for giving up so much of his time to help me develop.

In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?

Phil Sharp for what he has achieved.

Biggest Regret?

Having to disallow those goals of worbos, they were screamers, how that boy never made it I don`t know

Nice one Paul
