Wigan Athletic are set to sign South Korea international Cho Won-Hee, but who exactly is he, where has he played and most importantly is he any good?
First off he is 25 years old, soon to be 26, April 17th to be precise and he was born in Seoul, South Korea and at 5` 9" he isn`t a giant but not that small either.
His playing career at club level has taken him from Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i, Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix and finally to Suwon Bluewings who are the current K-League Champions and Cho spent the last three seasons there.
Internationally Cho has 27 caps for South Korea with one goal to his name which he scored on his debut for his country against Iran in October 2005
Cho can play in defence, left or right back and also in midfield
According to ESPN Cho Won-hee is an attack-conscious left-back or wing-back renowned for his strong work ethic, heart, dribbling ability and general sense of adventure, this Suwon star has it all.
Steve Bruce certainly likes him he says on the South Korean star:
'Won Hee has come and trained with us for the past couple of days and has done really well, we have been really impressed with him as a player and a person and can sign him as he is not under contract with any club.'
The news from the official site is that a work permit has been sought and so long as that is granted then Cho will become a Latics player officially on Monday of next week.
Latics were alerted to Cho`s availability by the agent of Honduras players Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa, he apparently represents Cho in Europe, though the players Korean agent, Kim Dong-ho is getting in on the act, he told the Korean Times:
`Everything is done. The work permit will be issued on Thursday or Friday. We will sign with Wigan on Saturday or Sunday if Cho gets the permit'
`We heard that Wigan were looking for a midfielder. They need a good midfielder, and we need a big league ― that made the deal possible'
The club have stressed that the signing of Cho Won-hee is in no way linked to potential club sponsors coming in from Korea, Hyundai have been strongly linked with the club over the past few months but as of yet there is no word either in acknowledgement or denial of Hyundai and the Latics joining forces from either the club or Hyundai themselves.
So there you have it, Cho is a midfield player who is also proficient at playing full back, either side, he is still quite young and a current international and hopefully a Wigan Athletic player come 5 pm on Monday.
