Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce says he sold the club to new signing Ben Watson and that is one of the reasons the young Londoner chose to join the Latics over Saturdays opponents Middlesbrough
Bruce also believes that with the Latics laying in 7th spot in the Premier League and Boro in a relegation fight Watson weighed up his options and decided he`d sooner have a comfortable first Premier League season than the battle that is expected to befall Boro.
Watson left Crystal Palace to further his career and Bruce used the recent sale of Wilson Palacios to Spurs as a reason why the combative midfield player should enlist at the JJB, Bruce explains:
'You'll have to ask Ben the exact reasons he chose us over Middlesbrough, but our position in the league obviously had a bearing.
'We sold him the club the same way we did to Wilson Palacios the year before.
'Here was his chance to come and play in the Premier League and prove himself at this level of football.
'Can he do what Wilson did with us?
'We always try to sell the club to potential signings by offering them the chance to show their talents here and then move on.
'It's sad when the time comes for a player to move on, but I think our supporters understand how we have to work.
'I would have loved to have kept Wilson but it just wasn't possible when we got the bid from Tottenham.'
If Ben Watson proves to be as good as Wilson Palacios then it will be another fantastic coup for Bruce who is gaining a reputation for making astute signings and turning the players into superstars, long may it continue.
