Wigan Athletic captain Mario Melchiot reflected on his time as a Chelsea player ahead of this afternoons game at Stamford Bridge and he spoke about the tough job that new coach and Mario`s fellow countryman Guus Hiddink has got at Stamford Bridge.
Melchiot was speaking to Wigan World when he told them that it was learning curve whilst he was at Chelsea and that he had a tough battle to keep his place in the team, he says that this experience has been good for him, he said:
'It was a learning curve for me at Chelsea and by the last season the team was full of new faces and you then had the challenge of keeping your place in the squad. So you have to stay calm and committed to make sure you survive.
With new boss Guus Hiddink in charge Melchiot believes that that Chelsea will be very disciplined, which is one of the qualities that Hiddink has and he sees this as a reason as to why Hiddink has been so successful as a manager, Melchiot continued:
'In Guus Hiddink Chelsea have one of the most successful managers from my country Holland.
'He's taking over a tough situation there because it's in the middle of the season, and he has to calm things down to make sure that he brings success to club.
'One thing he does do is make sure his teams are very disciplined which sometimes gets lost when a new manager comes in.'
Mario spoke about how the Latics have managed to turn around their season and overcome a tough patch at the start when they could buy a point, though the likeable Dutchman warns that Latics fans should keep their feet on the floor and not be dreaming of European qualification which he sees as just a step too far at this stage, Melchiot concluded:
'We started the season alright and went through a bit of a difficult patch where we were struggling to win games.
'After that we started to concentrate on the things we're good at, like making sure we don't get beat, and things turned round by us working hard in training, most of the time in the cold because everyone knows how cold a place Wigan is!
'Now we have a solid team that other teams know are going to be tough to play against, and that's the way the manager wants it to be.
'We have to make sure that the team keeps going, that's the most important thing.
'I think Europe might be a bit too heavy for us at the moment because as a team we've had a lot of new faces that need to gel together first, and then maybe we can look at obtaining more than just Premier League survival.'
Nice one Mario, but I say lets go for Europe and have an adventure
