With Wigan Athletic`s first Asian import comes an influx of questions from the Latic`s faithful. Who is this new signing and what does he offer our side for the rest of the season and beyond?
Very few know more of this latest recruit than his Korean nationality and reported versatility. Is he to be as successful in this league as fellow international team-mate Park Ji Sung or will his performances struggle to surpass the mediocre levels of West Brom`s Kim Do-Hoen?
Cho has spent the main fraction of his career at Pan-Pacific champions and Korean heavyweights, Suwon Bluewings. Many fans will already know of the 25 year old`s positional transformation, having shifted from a fullback to the middle of the midfield. Cho also featured in a conservative right sided midfield position in the late stage of his Bluewings career.
Whilst Cho has been a presence in the South Korean side over his career, his involvement has been restricted to deputy appearances, providing cover for many of the higher profile members of the international squad.
Injuries forced the midfielder to miss most of his last season for the Bluewings, and he left to pursue his career abroad after his contract was failed to be renewed.
Having rejected moves to the Japanese A League, Cho spoke of his desire to play in Europe, attending a trial at French side AS Monaco. However, with restrictions on non-EU playing staff, Cho failed to earn a role at the club. His disappoint though was short lived as, following a successful trial at Wigan in February, a move was completed earlier this month after permit difficulties.
The style of the Korean has been the source of much debate amongst Latic`s fans. Described as being "typically Korean in terms of his athleticism and his work-rate", the midfielder will join an already energetic central midfield.
There has been concern at Wigan over the lack of a more creative presence in the centre of the park; Cho`s acquisition though is unlikely to reduce these troubles. The lively midfielder does however provide essential cover for Cattermole and Brown, both prone to suspensions with their tenacious playing styles.
So, as another landmark passes for our fledgling club with the origins of this latest Wigan Athletic star, fans should anticipate a hard working, nimble and versatile addition to the squad.
Cho Won-Hee will add some much needed composure to the midfield, and though he will not be shy in carrying the ball forward for his new side, a bleak record of no goals in over 100 appearances for his former side, suggests that he will not be getting on the goal sheet to often.
