Wigan Food Review - The Spice Lounge

Wigan Food Review - The Spice Lounge

A new feature here on Vital Wigan is going to be the restaurant review, it`s the weekend, the Latics have won again and you want to go out and celebrate with a fine meal, where do you go, well read our reviews and make your choice, links will be kept in the Off Topic forum.

Now believe it or not Wigan has quite a few eateries of some note and here at Vital we have broken the bank to employ, for your benefit, one of the areas best food and food establishment critics.

So the first review is a favourite haunt of mine Indian Restaurant The Spice Lounge in Bretherton Row, off Wallgate Wigan, lets see what the Food Critic thought of it:

The Spice Lounge

Early Sunday evening found me and my party sampling the fayre at the Spice Lounge in Wigan.

On arrival we were seen to promptly and shown to our table which was set in bright, contemporary surroundings and laid out so that the diners could have space and intimacy.

The Spice Lounge describes itself as a passage to real Indian cuisine and the menu didn`t disappoint, a good choice of starters are offered from varied chat dishes including vegetarian to fish pakoras and sheek and shami kebabs. I ordered Onion Bhaji and my partner a Chicken Chat.

There is a large choice of specials on the menu using meat, vegetable or fish as the main ingredient including Shatkor, Deshi Banana, Sorse Murghi and of course there is the usual favourites such as Masalas, Madras, Korma etc.

There is also the Tandoori section featuring Lamb Tikka, Tandoori King Prawn etc. and there is an excellent choice of rice`s and breads to accompany your main meal, not forgetting side dishes that include Tarha Dahl, Panir Masala and Gajor Macha.

Our order of main meal consisted of Chicken Tikka Bhuna, with Garlic Nan, and Vegetable Garlic Masala with Garlic Rice. It is important to mention that the Spice Lounge doesn`t serve alcohol only soft drinks, but you can take your own beers or wine to consume with your meal and there is no corkage charge.

Our meals were delivered very promptly, popadoms and chutney tray was the appetiser the pops were crispy and warm and the chutney tray had a variety of relish and was a tasty treat.

The starters followed soon after and to my surprise there were THREE Onion Bhajis all of which were a good size, crispy and seasoned with fresh salad, the Chicken Chat was described by my partner has having exquisite flavours and left him with a huge smile on his face.

Our main meals arrived amidst wonderful aromas, my vegetable Garlic Masala was a good variation of vegetables nestled amid a mild but spicy sauce which was warming with a lovely garlic after taste, the rice was fluffy and had jewels of garlic giving it a wonderful taste.

My partners Bhuna was medium to hot and contained lots of tender chicken beautifully cooked with a dancing on the tongue spiciness. The Nan bread was well proportioned with a nice ripping action when you tore into it, there was no sogginess to the bread and it had a good topping of garlic.

When the meal was finished we were offered hot lemon fragranced face towels and the sweet menu which featured quite a few ice cream dishes and coffees and teas, we were too full to order anything off the sweets menu so politely declined.

All through the evening the staff were attentive without being intrusive and always approached with a smile, we had a wonderful evening, the food was great, the venue was lovely and the prices very reasonable, one thing is for sure about the Spice Lounge, I will be returning for more
