Wigan Athletic chasing the elusive 7th spot in the Premier League and with it possible qualification for the newly devised Europa League that will start next season need to attain a minimum of 56 points if recent history is anything to go by.
There are a host of clubs eyeing the position, Everton look secure in 6th and that is where they will most likely finish the season, so what about the rest?
West Ham currently occupy the seat and they are on 39 points but they have games against Spurs, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Everton, plus they will travel to Blackburn and Stoke before the season is out
Sat in 8th at the moment on 38 points are the Latics and we have games against Hull, Blackburn, Bolton, Stoke, WBA and Pompey to come yet...max points there? Why not
Also we have what I believe is a winnable game at Everton and surely we are good for a draw at home to Arsenal and wouldn`t it be good to spank the Mancs when we play our re-arranged game against them...so I am going for 65 points!!!
Joking
I think we have a good chance to achieve 56 points but will that get us 7th?
Fulham are 1 point and one place below Wigan in 9th on 37 points, they achieved their first away win of the season yesterday at our close friends (yeah right) Bolton, but is it enough to get the Cottagers momentum going?
A quick look at their remaining fixtures and it doesn`t appear too good, they have Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Everton to face yet, coupled with tough away days at Newcastle, Manchester City and Middlesbrough I cant see them challenging to be honest
The last team in my little equation is Manchester City who face Chelsea today at Stamford Bridge, nothing for them there then, they are in 10th spot on 35 points.
City still have a Manchester derby to contend with plus games against West Brom, Blackburn and Bolton at Eastlands whilst they will travel to Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Chelsea today, they are also tied up in the current Uefa Cup so they might not have the legs.
Two of the last three seasons it as taken 58 points and once 2006/07 Bolton got there with 56 points, I fancy 56 points will be enough this season and if I had to call it now I`d say it was between the Latics and West Ham with us having slightly the better run in.
Time will tell.
