Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that the JJB Stadium will have a new name come the start of the 2009/10 football season due to the current contract with present stadium sponsors JJB expiring at the end of the season.
It was rumoured earlier this year that Korean firm Hyundai were to be the new stadium sponsors but that now looks unlikely though they are still believed to be in negotiations to be the club sponsors and have their logo on the team shirts next season.
So what will the stadium be known as from next season onwards?
Whelan himself is keen for the stadium to be known as the DW Stadium confirming that the name 'It's high on the agenda' when asked about it. Talk about megalomania!
How about a more fitting title, some wags call the place the Pie Dome and that isn`t a bad title and adds a bit of humour to the place or what about the Canalside Stadium, sounds romantic, doesn`t it?
Choosing the right name Whelan says is a must, so don`t go for the DW Stadium Dave, and it is something that will be stuck with the place for a while, heres what the big man had to say on the matter:
'From this next season the stadium will be re-named. This is not something that happens lightly and the new name has to be something that has close Wigan connections and something that lasts.
'Some names sound good and some jar. Take the stadium in Huddersfield which used to be the McAlpine - quite a strong and memorable name - and is now called the Galpharm or something.
'So we've got to be careful about what we pick. But there are big companies locally who could be in the running.'
What do you think the place should be called? Leave your suggestions and reasons below, keep them clean please, we are a family site.
