Whelan Promises Europa Push if the Latics Qualify

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has promised that he will work with manager Steve Bruce to ensure that the Latics can go as far as they possibly can should they qualify for the new Europa League which is due to start next season.

Currently riding 7th in the Premier League, Latics are in pole position to take the last English place and Whelan is aware that the squad would need to be strengthened if an assault on Europe was indeed to be attempted.

Strength in depth has been a concern all season at the JJB with the Latics being seen has having a good team rather than a good squad and once suspensions and injuries start to nibble away form can suffer.

This is true of most clubs but with the extra games that European football brings then there is also the need to increase the size and also the quality of the squad to ensure that Premier League survival isn`t in jeopardy, Whelan told reporters:

"I understand the Premier League is the most important league of all but if you are lucky enough to qualify for Europe then you have to give it your best shot.

"I will work with Steve to ensure Wigan Athletic go as far in that competition as we possibly can"

I can't remember having been outbid for a player before. They just chose other clubs for whatever reason usually. i.e. Andy Johnson.
