A young Wigan Athletic reserve side came out victorious against Hull City reserves in this Barclays Premier Reserve League North with goals from Callum McManaman and John Routledge whilst the visitors replied through the ever young Dean Windass.
Latics took the lead just before the break when Redman won the ball and played it through to Joe Holt and in turn he found McManaman who evaded two markers to fire in a crisp shot from a tight angle.
In fairness Latics could have been 4 up by half-time, Jon Breeze completely missed the ball in front of goal after being set up by Tomasz Kupisz, Kupisz then had a goal bound shot somehow saved by Woodhead in the Hull goal and then the ever impressive Matty Hampson rounded the keeper but the angle was just too tight.
The second half was much the same with Latics dominating though Windass volleyed home from 10 yards on the hour mark to put Hull level briefly before Routledge broke through from midfield two minutes later and fired home from the edge of the box in to the bottom right hand corner.
Matty Hampson went close on a couple more occasions but his efforts fizzed agonisingly wide and the game finished Latics 2-1 Hull.
Reserve team manager Keith Bertschin said: 'I was really pleased for them. It wasn't a perfect performance by any means, and we still make silly mistakes at times, but we created several great chances, took two of them and defended well enough to get the win. Good for them.'
