Latics Reserves Lose Last Game of Season

Wigan Athletic Reserves ended their season with a home defeat to Blackburn Rovers Reserves 3-1 at Robin Park Arena with the majority of the team made up of players playing their last game for the club.

Latics are releasing most first year pro`s at the end of the season and this was the last game for the longest serving player at the club, Hindley lad Matty Hampson who has been at the Latics for over 10 years since he was a nipper, and he signed off with a stunning goal on 16 minutes

Blackburn went ahead on 8 minutes when winger Keith Treacy was allowed to turn and score from inside the box, Latics equalised through Hampsons superb strike which whistled into the top corner but the Rovers went back in front when Treacy was pulled down in the area and Nick Blackman put away the resultant penalty on 19 minutes

Blackburn sealed their win in the second half with another goal from Treacy when he curled a good effort from just outside the box on the hour.

Keith Bertschin though disappointed with the result said that it had been a good season for his young reserve side and tonight highlighted that you need to take your chances at this level, Bertschin told the official web site: 'The higher up the football ladder you climb the more it becomes crucial to take chances when they come along.

"I was pleased about the fact that we did create a lot against a very strong team, but disappointed with our level of concentration at other times. But they're all still learning and generally we have made big steps forward this season.'

Latics Team:
Nicholls, Crane, Pearson, Meace (Field 63), Redmond, Kupisz, Routledge (Amos, 86), Breeze (Lambert 86), Hampson, Holt, McManaman
Subs not used: Williams, Jukes

Good luck to the young lads finding new clubs

Latics v Brighton - Big Game Preview

Latics are back at the DW Stadium this afternoon following a very creditable draw on Tuesday away at Leeds, the game extending our unbeaten run to four, which must give us something of a platform to build on as the season is starting to take shape.

Brighton are flying high at the moment, currently 3rd in the Championship with just one away defeat, Newcastle at St James's Park and they have players, especially in attack, of exceptional quality at this level.
