Friendship Suspended on Sunday

Wigan Athletic captain Mario Melchiot has spoken about his friendship with Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy ahead of the pair meeting up at Ewood Park on Sunday.

The players first met at Ajax in 1998 but went their separate ways a year later when Melchiot left for England and Chelsea, whilst McCarthy headed off to Spain and Celta Vigo but they stayed in contact and remained firm friends, so much so that Mario was best man at Benni`s wedding.

Melchiot says: 'I always enjoy playing against Benni because he is a good friend of mine and a really good guy'

'I know Benni very well because we were team-mates for a long time.

'This won't be the first time I'll be facing him on the field but it'll still be a very interesting game.

'I want him to do well in every game - apart from when he plays against my team.'

Friendship suspended for 90 minutes on Sunday
