Valencia - Let The Bidding Begin

Real Madrid are believed to have made an opening bid of £16 million for Wigan Athletic midfield man Antonio Valencia

Real representative Miguel Portugal was at the JJB on Wednesday to watch Valencia in action against Manchester United and Portugal was so impressed that he stayed behind and following a meeting with Latics Chief Executive Brenda Spencer tabled a straight cash bid of £16 million.

With Manchester United also interested in the young Ecuador international and Latics valuing Valencia at the £20 million mark this Real bid is just the opener in what could turn into a bidding war that should see both the Latics and Valencia benefit.

Valencia had an excellent game against United and showed that he has more to offer than the more skillful but extremely petulant Ronaldo who plays for Ronaldo where as Valencia is a team player.

Could be an interesting few weeks as Brenda looks to secure the best deal for both the club and the player

Have been really disappointed with Valencia this season and can't see where the supposed inflated valuations are coming from. He hasn't looked arsed this season and I really struggle to see how he's likely to go for more than Palacios did. Looking at the squad you can see numerous departures over the coming weeks - some influential (Scharner), others a blessed relief (Kapo, Koumas, De Ridder etc). On top of that, expect a struggle to keep hold of Figueroa. My pessimistic streak predicts a hard 2009-2010 season with the first few months spent settling a new squad in.
