Alan Smith in Latics Link

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce is being linked with a move for Newcastle United and former Manchester United and Leeds United midfieldman/striker Alan Smith according to the News of the World.

Smith moved to Newcastle from Manchester United in the summer of 2007 for 6 million but he has failed to settle at St. James` Park playing 39 times for the Geordies without scoring a single goal and he also lost his place in the England squad and hasn`t featured since he was in the squad for the England Vs Brazil game in June 2007.

Smith was offered to Middlesbrough in January as Newcastle tried to loan Mido but the Egyptian chose the Latics. He has also been sent off 7 times in his career and at the time of writing he is the 2nd most prolific fouler in Premier League history behind Bolton`s Kevin Davies.

Smithy is a good player who will always give 100% but has made a couple of poor choices of club. As an ex Leeds player he never settled at Man U although he was playing regular foorball until his horrific leg break. At Newcastle he is in a poor team with a poor attitude and Sam Alladice was trying to change that but his sacking left Smith on a Limb and injuries have not helped. He would be a good signing to add drive to midfield and if he is played in a forward role he will score goals.

Can he even play as a striker anymore? I feel like his cutting egde has been dulled and his defensive rigor is poor.
