Deadline Passes without announcement

Wigan Athetic's deadline for Sunderland to decide whether they will pay the asking price for Steve Bruce has passed without comment.

Wigan set the deadline of last night but all the media outlets today seem certain of one thing.... that Steve Bruce will be unveiled as the Sunderland manager sometime this week.

The Daily Mirror reports that this could be as early as today.

The amount of compensation is expected to be significantly less than that demanded by Wigan.

Bruce's move appeared to have hit the buffers yeasterday, when media reports carried 'quotes' from Roberto Mancini, saying he was flattered to have been offered the Sunderland job. These however, were refuted by both Sunderland and Mancini's agent.

Dave Whelan has said that he will not consider looking for a replacement, until it is confirmed that Bruce is going but media reports have old boys Paul Jewell and Roberto Martinez as the front runners.

If this is true, why are Sunderland arguing over a paltry £3m compensation for a top manager when average players (King, Kapo) go for more than this amount? And more to the point, why do we seem so desperate to sell Bruce when he has done such a good job for us? Wil we ever learn?

Huh? We are desperate to sell him??? Whelan said he doesn't want to lose him but Sunderland made the approach and Bruce responded. He's desperate to leave!
01/06/2009 08:29:00
Yep its Bruce's choice to talk to them
01/06/2009 08:44:00
And why wouldnt he talk to them, he is doing a 'job' with the Latics and he is being head hunted by another organisation, surely in that position each and everyone of us would at least want to know what was on offer

It's not like there's all this money to be made punting your manager. A transfer fee for a manager is fairly unusual. Whelan paid off Birmingham essentially to force the deal though. If Sunderland want him they can refund us. It's like a security deposit.
