Latics Stunned By Martinez Fee

Latics Stunned By Martinez Fee

Wigan Athletic have been stunned by the amount of compensation they have been quoted by Swansea City if they are to recruit manager Roberto Martinez to replace Sunderland bound Steve Bruce.

The Guardian are reporting that the Latics have already made an approach to Swansea for Martinez, who is regarded as the best boss outside the Premier League and is number one on Dave Whelan`s hit list but due to the fee, reputed to be around £2 million, are now reconsidering their options.

The Guardian report an unnamed club source as saying: 'We made an approach to Swansea but they were asking for an absolutely nonsensical sum of money'

'Roberto was our number one target but we are now drawing up a list of other targets we want to talk to.'

As Whelan knows the best cost and if he wants to move the club forward then he will find a way of agreeing terms with Swansea, he did it with Birmingham when he acquired Bruce in November 2007 and he said at the time that it was money well spent.

The alternatives being bandied about are Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson, Craig Lavein from Dundee United and ex-Latics boss Paul Jewell none of whom are of the calibre or promise of Roberto.

Come on Dave get him in, you know it makes sense

Swanse must be pleased that there are 'others' interested because if they are going to lose Martinez at least they should be able to get a good compensation deal for him

They will probably want the money we just got for Bruce! Ugh changing managers is such a hassle.

I think the difference between a good manager and a bad manager is worth more than a couple million. That said he's already a bit of a risk.
