Roberto Martinez Comes Home

Wigan Athletic will announce officially today that former player, Roberto Martinez is the new manager at the JJB stadium following Steve Bruce`s departure to Sunderland.

Martinez will come full circle having joined the Latics in 1995 as a player and now he comes back 'home` as the boss.

Former Latics manager John Deehan was in charge at Wigan Athletic when Roberto, along with Isidro Diaz and Jesus Seba came as a package comically known as the Three Amigo`s, but it was soon apparent that Roberto was no joke

Dave Whelan was trying to expand his sports wear chain, JJB, into Europe and had identified Spain as a country that he could move into, he was set to open a shop in the Spanish city of Valencia and the store manager told Whelan that there were three lads who just maybe good enough to make the grade in England.

Deehan picks up the story: 'Dave checked them and that was how Roberto, Isidro Diaz and Jesus Diaz came over to play for Wigan in the old Fourth Division.

'Jesus didn't settle. But Roberto and Isidro were stars.

'I was not surprised Roberto got the job as I know how highly Dave Whelan rates him.

'He loved him as a player. After every game the first half hour of any conversation we had would revolve around Roberto. Dave thought he was a football genius.'
