Latics Youth Star Makes Irish Under-17 Squad

Wigan Athletic youth team player Tommy Amos has joined the Republic of Ireland`s tour to Qatar and jetted off with the squad hoping to make an impact before next months Under-17 European Championships in Turkey.

The young forward who is also the cousin of England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has had an exceptional time coming through the ranks at the Latics and Latics youth team boss Dave Watson recently said:"I am expecting big things of Tommy next season and he should be pushing for a start in the reserves"

With 312 goals in just three seasons he certainly has an eye for the net and hopefully he can make it all the way at the Latics, Tommy told the Irish Post: 'I haven't been to Ireland but my gran has always talked about me playing for Ireland'

'If the chance came up I would love to play for Ireland. It would be great if the FAI approached me.'

Now Tommy has the chance ironically alongside Wayne Rooney`s brother John who plays for Macclesfield and has also opted to try his luck with the Irish

Former Republic of Ireland star Tony Cascarino, who also wasn`t Irish by birth sees the funny side of the Rooney family being represented on different international teams, he says: 'It's a strange one all right but, if John is anything like Wayne, we'll be delighted to have him play for us.

'I'm sure the Rooneys will see the funny side of it. I'd just encourage him to enjoy the Irish set-up and the relationship with the fans because it's very special.'
