Javier Saviola in Latics link

Javier Saviola in Latics link

Real Madrid fringe striker and former Wigan Athletic target Javier Saviola has been linked again with a move to the DW Stadium, in the wake of the expected fire sale out of the Madrid club.

Once hailed as one of the most promising footballers in the world, as well as the youngest on Pele's FIFA 100 list, Saviola's star has cooled since joining Madrid on a free in 2007 and finding himself limited to substitute and Copa Del Rey appearances.

Latics, however, could be prepared to give the diminutive Argentine - said to be valued at around £5m - an escape route, especially with new Spanish manager Roberto Martinez fully aware of his talents.

Should Latics be able to fight off other interest in the number 9 and draw him to the Premier League, he would surely be an inspired signing for the new manager, and ensure a bright start to his term here, even with winger Antonio Valencia's expected imminent departure.

He was linked in January so you never know if its been rekindled or not but we definitely need a striker or two

who isn't being linked to him these days? Aparantly in january, we got as far as having a bid for him accepted, only to change our minds "becuase he wasn't match fit" (quote from tony adams). We then proceeded to sign another striker, who wasn;t match fit, and didn't play a single game. ...but hey. He would be a good addition to the premiership, if he comes here.

i only saw something related to this in someones blog.. :S would b great if we got him... would b a real marquee player for the club... but for 5mil, alot of clubs playing in europe would want him so im not optimistic of him choosing us over them :S

Wouldn't wages be a problem? In the end he would be a pretty good signing but I don't think he'll come.

Welcome to Wigan. We don't have a Waitrose, Harrods, John Lewis, Morrisons, an airport, a cathedral, a glass museum… or very much at all, come to think of it.

But the one thing we do have, apart from the George Formby Memorial Pier, is football. From Wigan United (as opposed to Wigan-United) and Wigan Town through to Wigan Borough and Uncle Joe's FC, the people of this humble mint ball mining settlement have been greatly entertained by men with silly haircuts and nobbly knees atte
