Whelan to Let Scharner Leave

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has told the Sun that if Paul Scharner comes and says he wants to leave then he will give the go ahead for the madcap Austria international centre half to leave the Latics.

Scharner always seems to get itchy feet at this time of year and indeed since he joined the club in January 2006 every summer he has spoken about a desire to play elsewhere in search of European football.

With reports that Fulham, Aston Villa and Everton from the Premier League and Hamburg and Schalke from the Budasliga are interested in taking the 29 year old defender it looks like he just might get his wish granted.

Whelan says he can go though he doesn`t want him to, he told reporters from the Sun:'Scharner may go. He is an unusual character to say the least.

'He even said if Steve Bruce tries to take him to Sunderland he wouldn't go because it was a backwards step.

'But if he comes to me and asks to go, I'll say 'Yes' - even though we don't want him to go.'
One club that Scharner wont be joining is Sunderland, when recently asked about a move to the Wearsiders Scharner replied: "That would be a backward step so why would I do that"
Looks like goodbye to the Scharner
