Wigan Athletic at the Masters


Wigan Athletic past players took part in their third masters tournament in the Merseyside Screw-fix Masters at the Liverpool Arena last night and though they didn`t win a game were unfortunate to finish bottom of the group.

The Latics squad featured ex-players Tony Pennock in goal with Andy Lyons, David Lowe, Colin Greenall, John Robertson, Pat McGibbon, Dave McKearney, Peter Atherton and John Doolan making up the rest.

In the first game the Latics faced pre-tournament favourites Liverpool and were extremely unlucky to lose 2-1, Pat McGibbon hitting the post with the goal at his mercy with just 6 seconds left on the clock. Peter Atherton got the Latics goal with Mike Marsh and Jason McAteer scoring for Liverpool.

Latics next game was against an Everton side that featured former Latics captain and stalwart Matt Jackson, Andy Lyons was on fire in this game and he gave the Latics a 2-0 lead before Everton`s Graham Stuart pulled a goal back just before half-time

With time running out and Latics winning 2-1 Jackson came back to haunt his former team-mates and ran Maradonna esque through the midfield riding challenges before skipping past Pennock in goal and side footing into an empty net, this game finished 2-2.

Latics were now facing their last game and had to win in order to qualify for the final, standing in their way Tranmere Rovers had just beaten both Liverpool and Everton and already qualified with some sparkling performances scoring 8 goals in the previous two games.

Latics attacked from the start and took a deserved lead when Andy Lyons thundered home a lovely volley that was his trade mark in his Springfield Park days, unfortunately for the Latics they couldn`t hang on to this good start and Tranmere proved too strong running out eventual winners by 2-1.

A good tournament and good fun for the fans and despite finishing bottom of their group with a record of played 3, won 0, drawn 1, lost 2, points 1, the Latics where far from being disgraced and provided some real entertainment.
