'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Super Lee Cattermole Heading For The Top

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez reckons Latics midfield general Lee Cattermole is destined for the very top in World Football following his exhilarating performances for the Under 21 team in the recent European Championships that were held in Sweden.

Martinez says that Cattermole played with maturity and it was obvious that he is a born leader and it is now the duty of the club to ensure that the 20 year old makes the step up to the full squad in time for him to be included for next summers World Cup finals in South Africa, Martinez says:'I think Lee showed great maturity in the tournament, and he played beyond his years

'It was a pleasure to watch him play in the centre of the midfield.

'He is one of those players who are born to lead other men, and I think the way he played in the tournament made everyone at Wigan very proud.

'We need to make sure he makes the step up now into the full squad ahead of the World Cup, and I think that is a clear example of his potential.'

With such fantastic displays for the Under 21`s coming on the back of what was a sensational first season in Latics colours there is no surprise that the ex-Middlesbrough man has generated interest from other clubs, but Martinez says that he is not worried by this and sees it as a sort of compliment.

Liverpool and Spurs have joined Sunderland as potential suitors of Cattermole but Martinez explains that this is a good sign and shows the club are on the right path, he continued:'I am not worried about the situation with Lee, as he is still a young man and you want that interest.

'I want the top clubs in world football to be talking about our players and about our football club.

'I prefer that to people not talking about our players. That is always a bad sign.

'It is down to us to keep progressing and making sure we are allowing these players to remain motivated and have the incentive to continue progressing. That should be part of our growth as a club - and we need players like Lee around to do that.

'It is important that Lee has his targets and keeps developing as a player, and we hope he can fulfil his potential.

'We have all seen he is a leader and someone who can go to the very top in world football. To have a player like that at your club is very exciting.'

Cattermole to be the next Latics captain? One things for sure we`d be stupid to let him go

Personally I thought he was head and shouldrs above the rest of the England squad and for me he and not Noble should have captained the team

I saw the England vs Germany game. He took a shot that hit the crossbar, it was awesome. Would have been a huge goal.

Plus he had a header cleared off the line
worbo
Didnt see that.

He was consistently the best england player game-to-game for me. Others faded in and out, or oscillated wildly between the ridiculous and the sublime (Milner!)
