Martinez - Whelan Never Lost Passion For Success

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says that chairman Dave Whelan still has the same amount of ambition and drive for the Latics has he did the first time they met in 1995.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Martinez said Whelan is a winner and his enthusiasm is contagious, even at 72 his drive hasn`t diminished and that is why the club is where it`s at, in the Premier League and still looking to move forward.

Martinez said:'I noticed on my first day back that he had exactly the same feeling as when I arrived in 1995, and that was a big surprise for me.

'He was a very enthusiastic person back then, desperate for success, and he wanted to improve the club, build a new stadium and get Wigan into the Premier League.

'He is a winner, which is contagious, and he will never be happy with where we are.

'That is the reason why Latics will continue to improve and always be looking for that next step - that comes from the very top.

'He was a footballer himself and he wants to face every challenge in his life and win it.

'That's the way he is. He is never happy with what has happened in the past and he wants to carry on being a winner - and that is a great
influence.

'He is a very unique man, not just in business, and someone who everyone can all learn a lot from. I don't think he'll ever lose that."
