Dave Whelan Welcomes James McCarthy to Wigan

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says the club will 'look after` new signing 18 year old James McCarthy and says the lads family are right to trust the Latics.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Whelan says that McCarthy is a quality player that`s been chased by a lot of clubs but chose Wigan because of the set-up and friendliness of the place, Whelan said: 'I've met him and I've met his family, and they all trust us at Wigan - and they can do, because we'll look after him.

'We're delighted to have him. Too many clubs have been after him for him not to be a quality player.

'There were a few other clubs in for him - Wolves, Celtic, and I also heard Tottenham were interested.

'But he likes Wigan, he likes Roberto, he likes the set-up here and he likes how friendly everyone has been to him.

'We are delighted he has so much confidence in us.

'He obviously believes we are a club that promote our youngsters and gives them a chance.

'Everything is going just fine, and it is one happy club at the moment, I have to say.'
