Wigan Athletic have announced that there will be a re-naming of the West and East Stands at the DW Stadium
Firstly the West Stand will be called the Springfield Stand in recognition to the previous home of the Latics, the beloved Springfield Park, like finding a long lost love memories are flooding back.
Secondly the East Stand is to be re-named the Boston Stand in recognition to Boston United who gave the Latics their league status back in 1978, how? Well back in the 77/78 season Boston United won the Northern Premier League and as such they were to be the representatives at the Football League AGM to try and gain admission to what was then Division 4 of the football league via a vote.
Boston decided not to apply for league status, their ground was below standard and their finances weren`t right, they just wasn`t ready for league football at that time, the Latics had finished runners-up that season and Boston stepped aside to allow the Latics the to try their luck, as they say the rest is history
Thanks to Boston the Latics became a league club...I`ll be quite proud to sit in the Boston Stand really.
Only joking all you Wigan Warrior fans sit down, the East stand is named in recognition of one of the all time rugby league greats Billy Boston who played for Wigan RLFC between 1953 - 1968 and a gentleman he is too.
A big congratulations to all who campaigned for this also especially Ye Old Tree and Crown and the 'others`, well done peeps.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez says he is delighted with the decision and he told the clubs official web site: 'Everyone knows about my association with Wigan Athletic and Springfield Park was really where it all began for me in England.
'I have some incredible memories of the place, I suppose the highlights for me were the night we won promotion in 1997 against Colchester, and then the Championship against Mansfield. But really, it was the place I grew up as a footballer. Great, great days.'![]()
