Wigan Athletic 1-1 PFC Minyor


Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is still searching for his first win in charge of the Latics but he came mightly close in this game against Bulgarian 1st Division side PFC Minyor.

Once again Martinez chose to make vast changes for each half putting the emphasis on fitness and looking at the players rather than getting a result, Latics started out the game with Mike Pollitt in goal and Hugo Rodallega operating as a lone striker up front

The first half team was:

Pollitt; Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa, Edman; de Ridder, Cattermole, Thomas, Bouaouzan; Gomez; Rodallega.

Latics took the lead with a well worked free-kick, Jordi Gomez crossing the ball for Rodallega to plant a header in to the net from close in.

Despite dominating the rest of the half the Latics couldn`t add to the lead and went into the break just a goal up.

Second half team:

Pollitt; Melchiot, Bramble, Scharner, Figueroa; Gomez, Watson, Cho, de Ridder; Cywka; Kupisz

Following wholesale changes the game started slowly but once again the Latics were on top and should have increased their lead on more than one occasion, Gomez was outstanding, but they paid the price for missed chances when Minyor equalised late on to deny Martinez his first win

It's not like flicking a light switch. We are assesing the entire squad and developing an entirely different style of play, it's not going to happen overnight. That's what these games are for, it's a sketch pad. Wait until the painting is finished before making the assesment.
