St. Mirren Chuffed To Get Latics Game

SPL side St. Mirren are absolutely chuffed to be lining up at the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic in a pre-season friendly and St. Mirren boss Gus McPherson used his intuition to get the fixture arranged.

Speaking to St. Mirren`s club website McPherson say`s he knew the Latics and Almeria had a game arranged but then noticed that Almeria had cancelled a proposed friendly at Swansea due to the swine-flu pandemic and he put two and two together and asked his general manager to contact the Latics on a hunch, McPherson takes up the story: 'We are really pleased to get the match against Wigan, but we have been fortunate, there is no doubt about that, as Almeira have cancelled their trip to the UK.

'We were watching the situation after we saw that Almeira had cancelled their match with Swansea and we knew that Wigan were scheduled to play them.

'So I asked (general manager) Brian Caldwell to make contact with Wigan and, within half-an-hour of contacting them, Almeira confirmed that they were pulling out of the game allowing us to arrange something with Wigan."

McPherson sees the game at the DW Stadium as excellent preparation for his sides assault on the SPL, he continued: 'Going down to face a Premiership side so close to the season starting will be really good for the players'

'I'm sure we'll see a really tough game as we are going up against Premiership opposition, which will be another really good test for the players as the Chievo game was. That was a fantastic education for the players.'
